Dear New Hampshire Democrat,
Earlier today, Organizing for America and concerned Granite Staters delivered over 10,000 petitions to U.S. Senator Judd Gregg urging him to help fix our broken health care system. With over 140,000 people in New Hampshire uninsured, and thousands more struggling to pay for skyrocketing costs, we can no longer afford to wait for reform.
For years, Washington Republicans have stood in the way of real health insurance reform, and this time is no different. Just a few days ago, Senator Gregg showed his cards by announcing he would do whatever it takes to single handedly stop Democrats' efforts to pass a meaningful health care bill. This behavior is not surprising, as Judd Gregg has received hundreds of thousands in special interest contributions from big pharmaceutical companies and the insurance industry throughout his tenure in congress. That said, we must hold him accountable for his actions.
As the summer recess comes to a close, it is time for us to send a message to Judd Gregg. That is why I am asking you to join me in contacting the Senator's office immediately to urge him to support health insurance reform. Be it sending a letter, making a phone call, or going directly to one of his offices and speaking with staff, every little bit helps. With so much at stake, your voice of support is very critical during the final stages of this debate.
Below you will find Senator Gregg's office locations, addresses and numbers:

Important Healthcare Forum in Salem New Hampshire
2) Senator Gregg holds a Forum on Healthcare in Salem, NHSenator Gregg will hold a Healthcare Forum in Salem, NH, at the Salem Senior Center at 9am on Thursday, August 20th. Senator Gregg sits on one of the key committee's working on national healthcare reform, The Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee in the US Senate. Senator Gregg continues to oppose important legislation before the United States Senate that would offer an affordable health insurance option to New Hampshire individuals and families. Over 140,000 people in New Hampshire do not have access to affordable healthcare. We need to call on Senator Gregg to visit with (and listen to) the hard working small business owners, healthcare workers, the self-employed and families in our state that suffer every day from a private health insurance industry that rations care, puts CEO's between patients and their doctors and denies care to millions of Americans every day!Join us tomorrow morning in Salem, as we call on Senator Gregg to support a strong Public Health Insurance Option so that families and individuals in New Hampshire can afford to go to the doctor! Carpool leaves 15 Eagle Court, Keene, NH, at 5:30am.
Please call Senator Gregg (603-225-7115) at his Concord Office to let him know:1) The average family plan in NH is $14,000, this is unaffordable2) We need healthcare reform this year that includes a comprehensive benefits package (dental care, vision, mental health, with a focus on prevention)3) That you support a strong Public Option this year!

CHeshire Democrats Book Club
Hello Everyone, After a summer hiatus, we are regrouping for a September meeting. We will be reading The Wordy Shipmates, by Sarah Vowell. It's an amusing look at the Puritans and how they still influence us today. We are going to meet on Wednesday, September 23, 6:30 PM at the Food Court at Colony Mill Marketplace. I hope you are all having a good summer and I look forward to seeing you in September. Linda Cates From Publishers WeeklyEssayist and public radio regular Vowell revisits America's Puritan roots in this witty exploration of the ways in which our country's present predicaments are inextricably tied to its past. In a style less colloquial than her previous books, Vowell traces the 1630 journey of several key English colonists and members of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Foremost among these men was John Winthrop, who would become governor of Massachusetts. While the Puritans who had earlier sailed to Plymouth on the Mayflower were separatists, Winthrop's followers remained loyal to England, spurred on by Puritan Reverend John Cotton's proclamation that they were God's chosen people. Vowell underscores that the seemingly minute differences between the Plymouth Puritans and the Massachusetts Puritans were as meaningful as the current Sunni/Shia Muslim rift. Gracefully interspersing her history lesson with personal anecdotes, Vowell offers reflections that are both amusing and tender .

How to WIN healthcare reform in 2009: Keep pressure on NH elected officials! We know that healthcare reform did not pass before the House and senate left Washington for the summer as we all had hoped, but that does not mean it is time to give up! The conservative opponents to healthcare reform will be mobilizing and acting during the month of August, and we need to make sure we are just as visible as they are.
Working Families Win has scheduled weekly demonstrations in Keene, NH to keep the public's focus on healthcare reform while our elected officials are back at home. We need your help to make these demonstrations successful (and to catch the attention of those we put into office).
Where: Central Square Keene, NH
When: Thursdays in August (6th, 13th, 20th, 27th) from 5-6:30pm
Why: To make sure our elected officials know that we want healthcare reform this year!
Tell everyone you know to come out and join us Thursdays in Central Square. We will have signs to hold, just bring yourself, your friends, and your stories on why healthcare reform is important to you.
Can't make it?
Make sure to take action on your own by writing a letter to your local newspaper, calling your Congressman or Senator, or writing them a letter.Don't live in Keene?Join us in spirit by starting a demonstration in your own town! George McGovern to visit New Hampshire
COME VISIT WITH GEORGE MCGOVERN
ON MONDAY JULY 20
On Monday July 20, the day after Senator George McGovern turns 87, he will spend the day in New Hampshire at two signing events for his book, Abraham Lincoln , one of the American Presidents Series created by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. (who asked him to write the book). Come to this reunion and welcome the Senator back to New Hampshire at Portsmouth at 11:00 AM at the RiverRun Bookstore and/or at 5:15 in Concord at Gibson's Bookstore.
For those who opposed the Vietnam War, Senator McGovern's 1972 presidential campaign with its "Peace is Patriotic" message was instrumental in forming their political activism. As a bomber pilot in World War II he knew more about the realities of war than did most others in the debate. His other great cause, ending world hunger, has resulted in the feeding of tens of millions of people, beginning with his job as Director of President Kennedy's Food for Peace Program, his work with Senator Robert Dole to revolutionize the U.S. Food Stamp program, his work as U.N. Ambassador on World Hunger and his his on-going efforts for international school feeding programs, which programs are providing millions of young girls, usually left out of educational opportunities in many countries, their only chance at getting an education.
When Senator McGovern appeared at the N.H. Democratic State convention in 1984, he shared the stage with 7 other presidential candidates, but only he received a standing ovation - and it lasted for 10 minutes - as New Hampshire activists honored the man described by Sen. Robert F. Kennedy as "the most decent man in the U.S. Senate."
The Senator will discuss the lessons of Abraham Lincoln and will take questions from the audience.
Date: Monday, July 20
Event 1 11 AM Riverrun Bookstore
20 Congress Street, Portsmouth NH 03801
store number: 603-431-2100
Event 2 5:15 PM Gibson's Bookstore
27 South Main Street
Concord, NH 03301
store number: 603-224-0562

Come out to Central Square to let the public know that you support Quality, Affordable healthcare. After the rally we will take action to let our elected officials know how we feel about healthcare reform.
Bring your friends, family, and neighbors to Central Square this Thursday in support of healthcare reform!
CALLS TO SENATOR GREGG!Make your voice heard: Call Senator Judd Gregg, 1.866.288.1495 on Tuesday, July 7 and Wednesday, July 8. (We are trying to pour in thousands of calls to Senator Gregg over these two days)
Congress is making major decisions on President Obama's proposal to bring down the cost of healthcare for working families.
But some special interest groups want to block reforms that will drive down costs - leaving millions of workers unsure if they can keep up with exploding healthcare costs.
Make sure the people who represent you in Washington D.C. know that if healthcare isn't affordable for ordinary working people, the healthcare system isn't working.
How to speak out:
1. Call Senator Gregg at 1.866.288.1495.
2. Do you know a family member or a neighbor who has struggled to get quality, affordable healthcare? Tell their story. Or, talk about concerns you have about the rising cost of healthcare.
3. Explain that healthcare won't be fixed until it's affordable for every worker in our community.
Now is the time to take strong action! We can't wait any longer because it's too important and Congress will be moving on this very quickly. Senator Gregg has not been with us on healthcare reform. It's time to call him and tell him to do the right thing for his constituents.
Sincerely,

Healthcare Reform Panel
New Hampshire Non-Profits Host Panel Discussion and Public Training on Healthcare Reform in 2009 Join Working Families Win, NH Citizens Alliance, and Other Local Non-Profits to Discuss and Support Expanding Access to Quality, Affordable Healthcare for All Keene, NH – A collection of New Hampshire non-profits will host a panel discussion and training titled “Quality Affordable Health Care for All in 2009: What It Is and Steps to Achieve It” on Wednesday, June 10th, from 6 pm to 9 pm in the Kay Fox Room at the Keene Public Library. The workshop is the second of a two-part series sponsored by Working Families Win and NH Citizens Alliance which combines an educational panel discussion with an advocacy and skills training session. The panelists will focus on the major public policy debates on national healthcare reform; discuss the public health insurance option and Medicare; and talk about the plan to include everyone in healthcare reform, including low income people, immigrants, and people of color. There will also be time for Q&A following the panel discussion. Panelists for this event include David Desiderato from Northeast Action, Ben Chin from Maine People’s Alliance, Terry Lochhead from NH Alliance for Retired Americans, and Jaime Contois from Working Families WIN. Following the panel discussion, participants will have the option of attending either a health equities training or an advocacy skills training session. In these trainings, participants will learn more about racial inequities in our current healthcare system, how to effectively contact their members of Congress, and how to best use the media to amplify their voices for quality, affordable health care reform. Sabrina Johnson from the NH Citizens Alliance and Ivette Luna from Ocean State Action will lead a training on health equities. David Desiderato and Jaime Contois from Working Families Win will host a training titled Advocacy Skills to Move Reform. The discussion around national health care reform is moving at a rapid pace. Grassroots advocacy is one of the most effective tools for stopping special interest groups and insurance industry leaders who are working hard to derail the growing movement for healthcare for all. Join us as we come together to learn more and develop our skills for effective advocacy. WHAT: “Quality Affordable Health Care for All in 2009: What It Is and Steps to Achieve It” WHEN: Wednesday, June 10th, from 6 pm to 9 pmKay Fox Room at the Keene Public Library WHY: Provide local residents with an opportunity to hear directly from health care advocacy experts about the federal health care reform movement, the opportunities and pitfalls of current reform efforts and effective advocacy techniques

Cheshire County Democrats Book Club
We met this week and had a good discussion of Last Lion, The Fall and Rise of Ted Kennedy, We all enjoyed the book and came away with a renewed impression of what an outstanding senator, Senator Kennedy has been. For June, we are reading Descent into Chaos: The U.S. and the Disaster in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia, by Ahmed Rashid. This book gets good reviews and we're looking forward to reading it. I've been able to get a copy from my local library, and it just came out in paperback. We are going to meet on Tuesday night, June 23, 6:30 PM in the Food Court at Colony Mill Marketplace.
